Frequently asked questions

What services does Nurtura offer?

We provide evidence-based Counselling and Play Therapy services for children, adolescents, and families. Our approach is trauma-informed, client-centred, and tailored to each person’s needs.

What is play therapy?

Play therapy is a specialised, child-centred intervention designed for children aged 2–13. It is a developmentally appropriate form of therapy that uses play as the primary way for children to express feelings, process experiences, and develop new coping skills. Play therapy is especially helpful for children who may find it difficult to talk about their thoughts and emotions directly."

What age groups do you work with?

We work with children aged 3–12 years for play therapy, and adolescents and adults for counselling. Parent/carer sessions are also offered to support the therapeutic process.

How do I know if play therapy is right for my child?

Play therapy can be helpful for children experiencing:

  • Anxiety or worries

  • Behavioural challenges

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Social or relationship struggles

  • Trauma, grief, or loss

  • Adjustment to life changes

We can discuss your child’s needs during the initial intake session.

Do parents/carers attend sessions?

For play therapy, children usually attend sessions on their own, but parents/carers are involved through regular progress consultations. For counselling, parents may join if it’s appropriate to the goals.

How long is a session?

  • Play therapy: 45–50 minutes
  • Counselling: 50–60 minutes
Each session starts and ends on time to support structure and predictability for clients.

How many sessions will be needed?

Every child’s therapeutic journey is unique. While the ideal course of play therapy is around 30 sessions, some children may need fewer, and others may benefit from longer-term support. We regularly review progress and goals together to ensure the length of therapy meets each child’s individual needs

Do you provide NDIS-funded services?

Yes. Nurtura is able to work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants under Capacity Building supports.

Do you only accept clients with NDIS funding?

No. We accept private-paying clients, too. We also offer discounts for our private-paying clients that can be discussed during the initial consultation.

Do you need a referral to book?

No referral is required. You can contact us directly to arrange an intake appointment.

What's the difference between counselling and play therapy?

Counselling is usually used with adult clients who are comfortable verbalising their feelings, emotions, and experiences. It uses talking-based approaches to explore feelings, behaviours, and solutions.

Play therapy is a specialised intervention for children that uses play-based, creative, and sensory tools to help them process emotions and experiences in a way that feels natural and safe for them.

What's the frequency of the therapy?

Individual play therapy and individual counselling sessions are ideally held weekly to maintain consistency and support progress. Duo therapy (two clients in one session) can be scheduled fortnightly when combined with individual play therapy. Social group sessions are commonly offered during school breaks.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an intake and assessment, where we gather background information, discuss concerns, set goals, and explain the therapy process. It usually takes 1.5 hours.

Are the sessions confidential?

Yes. All sessions are confidential in accordance with privacy laws and ethical guidelines. The only exceptions are if there’s a risk of harm or disclosure is required by law.

How do I book a session?

You can contact us via phone, email, or through our website "Book Now" page. We will arrange a time that suits you and send through intake forms before the first appointment.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee.

What will I tell my child before the first session?

You can tell your child that they will be meeting a play therapist who will have a special play session just for them. Let them know they can explore all the toys in the room and play with them in any way they choose. There’s no right or wrong way to play—the session is their time.

Do you have other services aside from counselling and play therapy?

Yes. In addition to counselling and play therapy, we also offer tutoring services for Maths. Soon, we will also be offering music instrument tutoring, keep an eye on our homepage for announcements.
